Mom’s House Inc. of Dover
Celebrates 25 Years
“Helping single parents build a better life”
Where do you turn if you’re a young single parent unable to afford childcare and want to continue in or return to school? Welcome to Mom's House of Dover! Our mission is to provide a God-centered, licensed program that delivers nurturing, free childcare for low-income, single parents who wish to continue their education. Mom’s House of Dover is a place where both parents and children feel at home. It is a warm, quaint environment our families enjoy throughout the year.
Founded in Dover in 1994, Mom’s House offers single parents a chance to return to school and plan a brighter future with the support of our services including classes on parenting, finances, nutrition, and more.
Located just three blocks south of Bayhealth Hospital on State Street, we offer single parents the opportunity to continue their education by providing childcare services to assist parents in building a better life for themselves, their families, and the community. Mom’s House combines a professional staff with qualified volunteers who operate the fully licensed child care center.
Our director, Amanda Penuela, runs the daily operation of Mom’s House of Dover, managing and coordinating all aspects of the program. Amanda is a 2006 graduate of Delaware State University, where she earned her bachelors in Early Childhood Education/Exception (Birth to Second grade).
Amanda gives “great credit to her awesome board, amazing staff, dedicated volunteers, and a community of supporters,” for the on-going success of Mom’s House.
In addition to running this community gem which is celebrating 25 years of operation, Amanda can personally identify with our parents because she too is a single mother of two beautiful children. Amanda has had a love for little ones all of her life. She is passionate and finds great pleasure in encouraging young mothers. Amanda sets an example for single moms to continue chasing their dreams, to raise their children and be a positive example to them, to teach them to not give up. Amanda’s mantra is, “Young mothers, continue your dreams, and Mom’s House will help you along the way. “
In addition to free childcare, other services provided for parents include one-on-one educational and personal counseling, advocacy, college preparatory support, and parenting classes. Mom’s House also provides an educational pre-school program, meals for children and parents, and personal assistance through donations of clothing, cribs, blankets and other necessities.
In return for benefiting from these services, parents agree to attend high-school or post-secondary school full time and maintain passing grades, along with donating a minimum of three hours per week to Mom’s House. This volunteer time is used working in the office, with the children, preparing meals, and in other services supporting Mom’s House.
Mom’s House is available to income-eligible single parents with children up to three years of age, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with space available for up to 12 infants and toddlers. Mom’s House maintains a 3:1 child/staff ratio. The dedicated staff creates the loving atmosphere Mom’s House is known for throughout its years serving the Central Delaware community.
Parents who are enrolled as clients in the program must be:
Single, widowed, or divorced.
Registered as a full-time student in an accredited high school or college within the state of Delaware.
Unable to otherwise afford such an opportunity
As a non-profit, non-denominational agency, Mom’s House funding is obtained through donations from individuals, organizations, fund-raiser, community contributions and grants.
We receive no government funding and therefore rely on local organizations and individuals for support. Mom’s House is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization (Fed Tax ID 51-0367119), so all donations are tax deductible and directly benefit our program, parents, and children Your contributions to Mom’s House contribute to changing the lives of two generations, single parents and their children. In addition to financial support, we are presently in need of replacements for our two aged office computers, printers, and scanners.
The community’s generosity, whether through monetary or in-kind donations, is deeply appreciated by all those involved with Mom's House. If you would like to visit us, meet our staff, and tour our facility, please contact Amanda Penuela at 302-678-8688 or via email at email@example.com.
